What to see in Kraków: Podgórze Market Square and a romantic 2-hour route (for young people)

Why start here?

Podgórze Market Square is the heart of the former town of Podgórze — today one of Kraków's most atmospheric neighborhoods. The square was laid out at the end of the 18th century as the central point of an independent town; the compact frontage, the town hall and the distinctive St. Joseph’s Church that dominates the square remain. This neo-Gothic church was built in the early 20th century and is one of the most photogenic landmarks in this part of the city. A walk around Podgórze Market Square is a great start because it combines history, architecture and local character — ideal for young people looking for nice photo spots and a pleasant vibe.

As a curiosity — this neighborhood keeps many traces of the past: from historic tenement houses to memorial places tied to the 20th century. The square used to host local life and markets — today it invites you for coffee, ice cream and a short, calm stroll away from the crowds of the Main Market Square.

If you only have two hours — perfect. In the route below I combine Podgórze’s most attractive points reachable on foot, with emphasis on romantic and “Instagram-worthy” frames that young people like. Everything is paced loosely: photos, a short drink break and nice views.

Note - the route avoids paid interiors; I focus on places publicly accessible and easy to do in 2 hours.

I don’t recommend other commercial guide services here — you can follow this route on your own or request it from me at zwiedzaniekrakowa.com.

Plan: 2-hour walk (step by step)

Start: Podgórze Market Square - meet in the middle of the square, by the fountain or at the entrance to St. Joseph’s Church. Time on site: 15-20 minutes - look at the facades of the tenement houses, the town hall and of course the church details (the tower’s shape echoes the bugle tower of the Main Market).

Direction 1: The quarry / the escarpment behind the church - a 10-15 minute walk and about 15 minutes to explore. Behind the presbytery and the church there’s a quarry, a surprisingly picturesque spot with charming cliffs and greenery. It’s a great place for unusual photos and a moment of calm.

Direction 2: The Vistula boulevards (short stretch) - 15-20 minutes. From Podgórze it’s easy to reach the Vistula, where riverbanks offer lovely views of Wawel and the bridges. A stroll along the river is always a romantic highlight - sit on the wall and take a photo with the panorama.

Direction 3: Bednarski Park or the green squares of Podgórze - 15-20 minutes. A small park with paths and a playground; great for a short break if someone in the group wants to rest or hang out among the trees.

Finish: Krakus Mound (optional short climb) - 25-30 minutes. If pace allows and you fancy a superb city panorama, climb Krakus Mound. The view is especially pretty at sunset - plan the walk so you can catch the “golden hour” there.

Estimated total time: 110-120 minutes at a relaxed pace with short photo and coffee breaks. The route is flexible - if you want to spend more time somewhere, you can easily shorten or skip the mound.

Places young people and couples love most

Podgórze Market Square - tenement houses, arcades and cafe tables create a cozy atmosphere. It’s a great place to start a date or meet friends.

St. Joseph’s Church - an impressive façade and a tall tower make a superb photo backdrop. Step closer to see the rose window and neo-Gothic details.

The Quarry (often called John Paul II Quarry locally) - the natural rock setting feels otherworldly and makes a dramatic photo scene. For couples it’s a spot with character and a hint of mystery.

Vistula riverbanks on the Podgórze side - riverside tables, benches and views of Wawel. This area is perfect for relaxed conversations, selfies with a panorama and short picnic moments.

Bednarski Park and green squares - quiet places to relax; young people like to sit on the grass, listen to music or do a short photo shoot.

Krakus Mound - a viewpoint with a great perspective over the whole city; often chosen for a romantic sunset.

Practical tips - how to plan and what to bring

Clothing and shoes - wear comfortable footwear, because although the route is urban, there can be some steps and uneven pavement. For the mound choose something with good grip.

When to come - the best time is early afternoon or evening (sunset) if you want a romantic atmosphere and nice light for photos. Weekdays are calmer than weekends.

Where to sit for a break - around the square you’ll find café terraces and small local places; if you prefer a cheaper option, bring a thermos or buy ice cream and sit on the river wall.

Bring a powerbank - young people take a lot of photos and stories, so the phone battery can drop quickly.

Safety and respect - Podgórze is a friendly neighborhood, but as in any city keep an eye on your belongings. Respect memorial sites and historic buildings.

Toilets - cafes near the square usually have customer restrooms; public WC options nearby are limited, so plan a break in a café if needed.

A few ideas if you have a little more time

If after two hours you want more, add a short visit to the former Podgórze ghetto area and walk with historical remarks — this deepens the context of the place and invites reflection.

Look for local murals and street art in the area - Podgórze has several cool corners with paintings that young people often photograph.

For the more active: extend the walk along the Vistula toward Dębnicki Bridge and beyond - the route works well for cycling or a longer stroll.

If you’re planning a date: finish the evening with a small dessert or another walk by the river - the warm lights along the embankment create a lovely atmosphere.

Finally - have fun and take photos, but also try to look around without your phone for a while. Podgórze has its own character — a great place to feel Kraków from a different side than the crowded Main Market.

Bonus: quick FAQ and extra practical info

How do I get to Podgórze Market Square from the Main Market? - It’s about a 20-30 minute walk across the bridges and through Kazimierz/Podgórze, or a short tram ride. Walking gives more local atmosphere.

Is the route suitable for families with small children? - Yes, the route is family-friendly. Bednarski Park has a playground, and the riverbanks are pleasant for strollers, though some parts have steps.

Are dogs allowed? - Yes, Podgórze is dog-friendly, but keep dogs on a leash in public spaces and clean up after them.

What if it rains? - There are cafés around the square for shelter. The route can be adapted to focus on covered stops or shortened to avoid weather-exposed spots.

Photo tips - early evening light by the river and the church’s façade make excellent photos. Try wide shots from the river wall for Wawel views, and close-ups in the quarry for dramatic textures.

Accessibility note - while much of the route is on pavements, some areas (old streets, steps to the mound, rocky sections in the quarry) can be challenging for people with limited mobility. Plan an adapted route if needed.
