Did you know that in Krakow you can visit the WOMAI Center of Science and Senses, step “into the dark” to experience aspects of life without sight, and then—within the same day—ride a Segway through the Old Town and Kazimierz? It’s a great way to vary the pace of your visit: an intense, reflective museum experience followed by a light, fun outdoor tour.
WOMAI is located at ul. Pawia 34 and offers two main exhibition paths, “Into the Light” and “Into the Darkness.” The center welcomes families, school groups and adults, combining sensory exhibits, educational content and hands-on workshops.
Two-hour Segway tours in Krakow are popular — long enough to comfortably glide across the Main Market Square, follow part of the Royal Route, see the Wawel area and explore Kazimierz, stop for photos and hear short stories about key spots. Before each tour there’s usually a short training session; participants are provided with helmets and guided supervision.
WOMAI and a Segway create contrasting but complementary experiences: inside the museum you slow down, focus your senses and gain new perspectives; on a Segway you move quickly, see the city in motion and can visit more places in less time.
For families with children this pairing works especially well — after hands-on, intense exhibits at WOMAI, children often need to expend energy; a Segway ride gives them excitement and extra motivation to keep exploring. For couples and adults it’s a mix of learning, reflection and pleasant outdoor activity.
If your time in Krakow is limited, a logical plan is to visit WOMAI in the morning (many entry times are scheduled) and take a Segway tour in the afternoon when the light is nicer for photos and the streets are more relaxed.
09:30–11:00 - Visit WOMAI: guided tour along the “Into the Light” or “Into the Darkness” path, attend an experiment show or a sensory workshop. Book tickets in advance to match your preferred entry time.
11:00–12:00 - Coffee break nearby: I recommend well-rated cafés in the center where you can grab a bite before heading outside.
13:30–15:30 - Two-hour Segway tour: training session, ride through the Main Market Square, around Wawel, along the Vistula boulevards and through Kazimierz. The schedule allows time for photo stops and brief stories at the main points.
You can reverse the order: Segway in the morning (fewer crowds) and a calm, reflective visit to WOMAI in the afternoon. Remember to check WOMAI opening hours and Segway tour availability for the same day.
WOMAI is an interactive center that emphasizes sensory experiences: exhibits about light, sound, scent and touch, plus a special “Into the Darkness” trail where you move in conditions similar to the absence of sight and learn solutions that make daily life easier for people who are blind.
Exhibits include educational elements and live experiment shows — the center also runs workshops for schools and organized groups. WOMAI has been operating since late 2019 and continues to expand its educational programs for different age groups.
When planning your visit, note that some activities have limited capacity — it’s a good idea to reserve tickets online or by phone and to arrive a few minutes early.
A typical two-hour tour includes a short training session before departure, provision of a helmet and guidance from an instructor-guide. Routes are usually adapted to the group and avoid steep climbs. Segways work best on larger, flat areas and well-paved sidewalks.
Safety requirements: the minimum participant age is often around 12 years, and there are weight limits for the equipment (commonly from about 35 kg to 120 kg). In case of heavy rain or dangerous weather, operators may cancel or reschedule tours. Before booking, check the policies of the specific operator and what is included in the price (transfer, insurance, equipment).
Prices and meeting points vary by operator — popular meeting spots are near the Market Square (for example Sławkowska or Wiślna). Prices for a two-hour tour typically range from modest to higher amounts depending on extras offered by the operator.
If you plan a lunch or coffee break, I recommend well-rated central spots: the shopping and food area Zielone Arkady (offers many choices), Café Camelot on Św. Tomasza Street (atmosphere and excellent desserts), and the restaurant Miodova near the Market Square (good Polish and international dishes).
In Kazimierz you’ll find highly rated restaurants offering Jewish cuisine, fusion and popular snack bars — choose places with strong reviews to ensure good food and service. If you’re short on time, a quick stop for street food or coffee near the Market Square is easy to combine with a Segway tour.
For families with children: pick restaurants that offer quick kid-friendly dishes and baby-changing facilities — this makes the day much easier.
When planning WOMAI and a Segway on the same day, don’t book both activities too close together — leave at least 1–1.5 hours buffer for travel, food and quick changes.
Don’t underestimate the weather: riding a Segway in heavy rain can be uncomfortable, and some WOMAI activities may be affected by unusual group conditions. Check the forecast and operators’ rules.
Don’t ignore weight and age limits — before signing up a child or a very small person, check the Segway operator’s requirements. It’s also good to inform the guide about any health issues.
WOMAI sometimes stages experiment shows using fire and gases and runs workshops announced in its news section — it’s not just static exhibits but active experiences.
A Segway tour is more than a fun ride — a well-run tour includes short local stories and tips about less obvious places you can later visit on foot.
Many operators offer Segway rentals for 30 or 60 minutes if you don’t want a full two-hour tour — a good option for a shorter ride focused on a specific area.
Do I need to know how to ride a Segway? No — there is a short training session before the tour that teaches the basics of control and safety.
Is WOMAI suitable for children? Yes, exhibits are designed to engage different age groups; many activities are tailored for children and teenagers. When booking, check the recommended age for specific workshops.
Do I have to book in advance? For popular times and weekends it’s wise to book early, especially if you want to combine WOMAI with a two-hour Segway tour on the same day.
What should I bring? Comfortable clothes and shoes; closed shoes are best for Segway riding. Bring water on hot days and a light jacket for cooler weather since it can feel colder on a Segway.
Check WOMAI opening hours and workshop availability, and book tickets. Make sure the Segway operator has a time slot that fits your schedule. Bring an identity document if required for booking. Arrive 10–15 minutes early. Remember Segway weight and age limits. Inform the operator of any health concerns.
